Want to take your mountain exploration to the next level? Join Silverton Avalanche School instructors and guides for a three-day Ski Mountaineering Seminar based out of Silverton, CO in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. We'll cover a wide range of skills from high-level mapping and planning, mindset and human factor considerations for big objectives, technical skills, rappelling with skis, and more. Day one will cover some planning skills in the classroom, and we'll have ground school for technical skills. The remaining two days, we'll dive into local ski objectives with a focus on applying techniques in a non-contrived setting.
We will dive into the following topics, including, but not limited to:
Human element factors associated with big mountain skiing
Rappelling and basic anchors
Ski/snowboard descent techniques
Best line choice based on avalanche danger, snow quality, and weather
Surface problem mitigation in technical terrian
Belayed skiing
Advanced route planning and collaborative mapping
Using traditional and alternative methods to gather route data
Continual reflection on a refinement of your approach to self and situational awareness as you interface with terrain of consequence
Applicants must send in a resume detailing their five proudest ski lines to date with associated gain/loss, mileage, date, partners, and ATES rating. We would also like applicants to submit a Snow Pilot snowpit profile from sometime in the past season, or leading up to the course start. We would prefer that participants have taken a Recreational Level Two Course, and at the very least, a Recreational Level One.
Please join us for this course which will help you raise the bar and give you the skills to help you achieve your ski/snowboard mountaineering goals!
