John Chapman
(REC)
Hailing from the great state of Maine, John has always been all about snow. Since learning how to snowboard at the impressionable age of 6, sliding on snow has always been on the forefront of his mind. John’s love for Colorado took root in second grade when ski bum aspirations were set into gear. At 19 he headed for Summit County, CO looking for bigger kickers and longer rails. With a competition based upbringing, days sitting at the top of a course waiting for a run gave way to freeriding and exploration. Through freeriding, the fascination to explore larger terrain on a splitboard felt like a natural progression and he started touring at 23; seeking solitude, soul turns and blinding powder.
John is natural educator with a devotion for sharing his passions and knowledge in all seasons—in the mountains or on the water.
As a mountaineer, John cut his teeth in the frigid, glacially rounded peaks of New Hampshire’s White Mountains—steep, not deep. John came to SAS for Avalanche Rec 1, and back again for Rec 2. Subsequently, the allure of the San Juan Mountains called him back years later. After pursuing sea kayak guiding in his home state, John moved to Durango with the aspiration to work with SAS and become an AMGA Splitboard Guide
As an AMGA Ski Guide Apprentice, Maine Sea kayak guide, Colorado Raft guide, and previous dogsled guide, John is stoked to be learning from, and working along side the professionals at SAS that he has looked up to since beginning his path to avalanche awareness.
John holds certifications as a WFR, A3 Professional Level 1, AMGA Ski Guide Apprentice, and is a Registered Maine Guide.
